Side Show - Moria Orc Bust |
|
Following the intricate
and very successfull threepart movie version of John Ronald Reuel Tolkien's
best selling novel "The Lord of the Rings" by Peter Jackson, there are quite a number
of fine detailled (but unfortunately prepainted) sculptures, depicting all sorts of creatures
and characteres from the three movies. Actually these prepainted movie statues (and not only from the Lord of the Rings, but from many other movies) seem to become more and more popular these days. Due to the fact that many of these statues are very detailed in their making, but mostly own just a paintjob that can hardly be called more than a standart factory paint application, what seems more logical than take your turn and give them the propper paintjob they deserve. When I saw the Moria Ork Bust from Sideshowtoys I knew this was the right choice for repainting such a prepainted statue. The "stripping" Because this bust comes as an allready painted model, a so called "prepaint", I had to clean it up from it's paint, prior to repainting it. You don't necessarely have to get rid of the paint first on every prepaint, but my experiences have shown that the prepainted layers of paint often will obscure much of the fine details such a statue usually has. And I was right with this Orc bust. Stripping off the paint revealed a much finer skin surface structure. Luckily the material Sideshow uses for casting these busts, is a very hard and sturdy resin ("called" Polystone by Sideshowtoys), on which I can use common paint thinner from the DIY, to get the paint off, without destroying the model. To do so, I just poured a bit of the thinner into an old, out of service frying pan and placed the bust into it. Then I used a thick brush and wiped over the bust with the thinner to disolve the paint. This may take a while and you don't get the model a 100% clean, but for a repaint it is well good enough. You can also take a wooden toothpick and remove some of the left over disolved paint out of any small detail. Very important! But make sure, as with all kinds of chemical substancies you may use, to only use the thinner in a well vented room to avoid any poisoning from the fumes! However, allways test your thinner on your model on an invisible area, before using it on the entire model. One small detail I had to modify. The sculptor had sculpted small holes into the eyeballs, for the pupils. As I knew, these would trouble me when painting the eyes, I used a bit of sculpting putty to even out these holes. First here is an image of an originally painted Moria Orc bust. |
After I had cleaned
up the bust well enough, I could see that the several layers of prepainted paint
had covered quite a bit of the well sculpted details. The first paint followed. As a basecolor I painted all of the skin areas with a light and pale yellowgreen. Over that I washed a few layers of thined darker green paint. Onto the eyes and ears and several wrinkles and pimples I washed some light red. These areas will tone down through the further process of painting but keep their effect in the overall paintjob. |
Here I have added a few tiny spots. These spots allways look good on such a monster's skin and fit in very well with the filthy, battered look of an Orc. Right now these spots look quite clear and noticable, but will later merge with the whole paintscheme nicely. Also the gums got their first layer of pink. |
Schatten. |
Now I have washed the skin with darker
greens. I target these washes to all the recessed areas of the skin and
enhance the naturaly given shadows. |
In the next step I payed attention to the
eyes. Such a face will have a different effect once it is able to look at
you while you are painting it. I used the image of a Moria Orc (or are
they however really goblins?) and his eyes as an inspiration. |
And on I went with the eyes. First I lightened
up the centers of the eyeballs with a light yellow again, then I painted
some radial thin lines around them. In the center I then painted a vertical,
convex, black line for the pupils. |
Here I have washed the eyes with some more
dark green ink. By doing so, the eyeball's edges became darker and
the eyes gained more depth. |
Somehow I was unhappy with the eyes and so I painted them over again. I started with the teeth instead and painted them white first. |
Well, the eyes now had pupils again. I
had also shaded the teeth with several thin layers of yellow-ockre. |
Als Nächstes hab ich dann die Haare
begonnen.
Next I have started with the hair. This
helped me to get a better overall impression of the face. |
Gesamtbild einpassen. |
The hair was now close to what I was imagening. Washes from darkbrown and
black, in combination with grey and green drybrushes made the hair fit into the overall look. |
Here I have worked a bit more on the skin. |
Next the armour parts have received a few thin washes with a darker gunmetall paint. I made sure that all the edges would stadnout in their bright silver colour, so the armour would not get too dark overall. |
With the darkest metall paint I have used so far I washed the armour quite dark, still leaving all the edges stand out in silver. |
After I have darkened the armourparts even further with some more metallic paints, I have started to apply a special 2-part rustpaint to make the armourparts look old and rusty. |
With drybrushing silver paint I have enhanced
certain areas and edges of the armour. I also went over the armour with
the rust paint some more times and intensified the weathered effect. |
gemalt. |
Here I have painted some more with the rustpaint. |
The finished bust can be seen here. |
